The Impact of Breast Augmentation Surgery at UT Southwestern
There is no typical patient for breast augmentation. We see women who simply want larger breasts, some who want to replace implants, and some with breasts that sag after having children. Whether for restoration or enhancement, the key to breast surgery is to improve symmetry while augmenting the natural breast contour and shape.
At UT Southwestern, our team is internationally recognized for delivering outstanding clinical care and conducting groundbreaking research. Our plastic surgeons take a number of factors into consideration before making a recommendation about implants.
We talk with each patient regarding what size implant is appropriate for her body and objectives. We also discuss the options available for surgery and how it will be performed.
What to Expect from Breast Augmentation
For the procedure, breast implants are filled with either saline or silicone gel. Both options are very safe, and each offers several advantages. Silicone breast implants feel more natural than saline-filled implants. Regardless of what the implants are filled with, all have shells made of silicone, can have a textured or smooth surface, and can be either round or teardrop shaped.
Breast augmentation surgery usually takes one to three hours. An overnight stay is not usually required. There will be temporary swelling, bruising, and some pain. Women with implants do not have problems with the detection of breast cancer. Regular screening mammograms are still performed. Breast augmentation does not affect lactation.
Maximizing Long-Term Results
The results achieved through breast augmentation should last for years, although pregnancy and aging will alter the size and shape of the implants. With these types of changes, options include a breast-lift or implant replacement.
