Colorectal cancer is cancer that occurs in the colon or rectum. It usually begins as an abnormal growth, called a polyp, that forms in the colon or rectum.
Colorectal cancer often goes undetected until it is more advanced, making timely and highly effective treatment a necessity for any patient with the disease. At UT Southwestern, our specialists are dedicated exclusively to treating colorectal cancer using the most advanced treatments and technologies available.

Services We Provide for Colorectal Cancer Patients
At UT Southwestern, our multidisciplinary specialists use the latest techniques and research to create individualized treatment plans for patients with colorectal cancer. Our team has extensive experience with minimally invasive surgical techniques that reduce recovery time. Our program includes:
- Screening and diagnosis through colonoscopy, a procedure that uses a flexible tube to examine the entire colon
- Virtual colonoscopy, which is less invasive than conventional colonoscopy, and fecal occult blood tests (FOBTs), which look for hidden blood in stool
- Expert delivery of the most advanced medical and surgical therapies available for colorectal cancer
- Integrative therapies, nutrition counseling, and other support services for patients and their families
As a medical research institution, we offer access to clinical trials, giving our patients the opportunity to try the newest treatments for colorectal cancer not available elsewhere.
