Diagnosing and Treating Maxillofacial Problems
UT Southwestern’s maxillofacial surgeons use advanced imaging to precisely
diagnose injuries and conditions of the face and jaw.
We then work closely with patients – and often with our colleagues in dentistry, oral
surgery, orthodontics, and other
specialties, as needed – to create and execute a personalized and comprehensive
treatment plan.
Whether patients’ conditions were present at birth or a result of
injury, disease, or a genetic condition, our surgeons can repair and realign
the bones and tissues of the face.
Services We Provide
Orthognathic
Surgery
UT Southwestern offers corrective and reconstructive jaw
(orthognathic) surgery, which is sometimes necessary when the jaws do not meet
correctly or the teeth do not “fit” with the jaws.
Maxillofacial
Prosthodontics
UT Southwestern also offers maxillofacial prosthodontics – dental
prosthetics for jaw and facial tissue. Our maxillofacial surgeons use the most
sophisticated techniques to correct defects of the head, face, and jaw caused
by tumors, cancer surgery, traumatic injuries, and birth defects.
Prostheses, made from human tissue or artificial materials, include
eyes, ears, noses, and special devices to improve speech and swallowing.
A comprehensive evaluation by a dentist, orthodontist, and oral
surgeon helps us determine which patients are most likely to benefit from surgical
interventions.
