Individualized Treatment of Heart Rhythm Disorders
Heart rhythm disorders (cardiac arrhythmias) range from harmless palpitations to life-threatening conditions. There are many types of heart rhythm disorders, and they can affect people of all ages.
UT Southwestern’s specialized cardiologists are respected by their peers as experts in diagnosing cardiac arrhythmias and delivering the treatments necessary to reduce or completely eliminate the conditions.
UT Southwestern is also home to a dedicated Cardiac Rehabilitation Program. Cardiac rehabilitation is a critical component of recovery and can prevent future heart disease.
Treatments for Heart Rhythm Disorders
Treatment for heart rhythm disorders is tailored to each patient. If rhythm- or rate-control medications fail to significantly reduce the incidence of arrhythmias, or if medication cannot be tolerated, patients might be candidates for other therapies. These include:
- Cardiac catheterization
- Cardiac implantable device (CID)
- Laser lead extraction
- Cardiac resynchronization therapy (biventricular pacing)
- Catheter and cryocatheter ablation
- Electrical cardioversion
- Electrophysiology
- Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD)
- Insertable loop recorder
- Pacemaker implantation
- Radiofrequency catheter ablation
- Surgical ablation
- Ventricular tachycardia (VT) and epicardial VT ablation
Support Services
UT Southwestern’s cardiac rehabilitation specialists create customized plans that integrate proper nutrition, exercise, and, if necessary, nicotine cessation into patients’ lifestyles to improve their cardiovascular health.
Clinical Trials
As one of the nation’s top academic medical centers, UT Southwestern offers a number of clinical trials aimed at improving the outcomes of patients with cardiovascular disease.
Clinical trials often give patients access to leading-edge treatments that are not yet widely available. Eligible patients who choose to participate in one of UT Southwestern’s clinical trials might receive treatments years before they are available to the public.
