At UT Southwestern Medical Center, we offer the latest treatments for people suffering from chronic neuropathic pain. Our neurologists use state-of-the-art methods to diagnose the condition and then tailor treatments for each patient.

Integrated Approach to Chronic Neuropathic Pain

Neuropathic pain is a chronic pain state in which nerve fibers are damaged or dysfunctional. This damage can occur in the central nervous system or the peripheral nerves, especially the nerves in the hands and feet. The damaged nerve fibers send incorrect signals to other pain centers.

UT Southwestern physicians integrate multiple specialties into the treatment of people with this complex, sometimes debilitating pain.

We have one of the few pain management centers in Texas with on-site pain specialists, behavioral medicine specialists, and physical therapists. Our Pain Management Program often uses a combination of medical, rehabilitative, and behavioral therapies to address neuropathic pain.

Symptoms of Neuropathic Pain

Neuropathic pain often causes pain in the hands and feet. Patients might experience:

Diagnosis

Our physicians first examine a patient’s medical history, including a thorough review of the patient’s pain history. We might request neurological exams and neuropsychological assessments to explore possible causes and suggest treatment options.

State-of-the-art procedures such as electrophysiological tests, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and blood analyses are also available to further investigate a patient’s pain sources.
