Spondylosis is a condition in which there is abnormal wear on the spine’s vertebrae and the discs between them.
Cervical spondylosis occurs in the neck and is a common cause of chronic neck pain. Thoracic spondylosis and lumbar spondylosis occur in the middle and lower back, respectively.
If we suspect spondylosis, we’ll conduct a physical examination. Spine imaging studies used to diagnose spondylosis can include:
- Bone scans
- Computed tomography (CT) scan
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- Nerve conduction studies to measure electrical activity generated by muscles and nerves
Treatment for spondylosis depends on the severity and location of the problem and can include:
- Anti-inflammation drugs
- Cortisone injections
- Physical therapy
