Ankit Patel, M.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and a clinical educator at the Spine Center.
He received his medical training at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He completed a fellowship in pain medicine at MD Anderson Cancer Center. He then performed a transitional year internship at the Christiana Care Health System and a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Baylor College of Medicine.
Dr. Patel is board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation and has a subspecialty certification in pain medicine.
“I feel that I’m in a unique position because my background combines physical medicine and rehabilitation and pain medicine,” he says. “These specialties enable me to provide a comprehensive evaluation and treatment plan for my patients.”
Dr. Patel is a member of the Spine Intervention Society, American Academy of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, and American Medical Association among other professional organizations.
Dr. Patel has been included in D Magazine's Best Doctors list and was named a Super Doctor by Texas Monthly. In 2015, he received the Faculty Teacher of the Year Award from the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.
As an expert in physical medicine and rehabilitation, Ankit Patel, M.D., helps patients with spine and musculoskeletal pain. He specializes in identifying the cause of the pain and developing a plan to treat it, with an emphasis on improving his patients’ function and quality of life.
“I believe in individualizing the treatment plan to fit the specific needs and goals of my patients. Treatment options that I may incorporate include physical therapy, optimizing medical management, and interventional pain management techniques.”
Dr. Patel is fellowship-trained in providing a variety of nonsurgical treatment options, including nerve blocks, epidural steroid injections, joint injections, radiofrequency ablations, spinal cord stimulator trials, and kyphoplasty.
His interest in physical medicine and rehabilitation was piqued early on when he witnessed family members being helped by specialists in the field.
“I grew up in an extended family, and several of my family members had multiple spine or musculoskeletal ailments,” he says. “As I was involved in their medical care and decision-making process, I developed a fascination with both nonsurgical musculoskeletal medicine and the continuity of care aspect of physical medicine and rehabilitation.”
