Associate Vice Chair of Clinical Research
Ayesha Zia, M.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She specializes in pediatric thrombosis and thrombotic outcomes, global coagulation assays, and treating young women who have bleeding disorders.
Dr. Zia earned her medical degree at King Edward Medical University in Pakistan. She completed a residency in pediatrics at the Children's Hospital of Michigan, where she also received advanced training through fellowships in pediatric hematology-oncology and pediatric hemostasis-thrombosis.
In addition, she holds a master’s degree in clinical sciences from UT Southwestern.
Certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in pediatric hematology-oncology, she joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2013.
Dr. Zia leads the UTSW Pediatric Hemostasis Thrombosis Program and the Hemophilia Treatment Center. She also serves as Director of the Medical Center’s Young Women's Blood Disorders Program, the first and only program in North Texas that focuses on evaluating and treating young women who have bleeding and clotting disorders and associated reproductive problems.
Her current research projects are focused on thrombotic outcomes, including functional limitations such as exercise intolerance and dyspnea on exertion and on improving diagnostic strategies, access to care, and quality of life in adolescents with heavy periods and bleeding disorders.
She has a particular interest in the use of global coagulation assays, such as thromboelastography and thrombin generation in the diagnosis and management of bleeding and clotting disorders.
Dr. Zia is the institutional co-investigator for several clinical trials that are exploring new treatments in hemostasis and thrombosis, including new medications for hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, and blood clots.
She co-chairs the Standardization and Scientific Subcommittee of the Neonatal and Pediatric Scientific and Standardization Subcommittee for the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis and chairs the society’s Post-Thrombotic and Hemostasis Working Group.
Dr. Zia is the recipient of multiple intra- and extramural awards and has maintained active National Institutes of Health funding since 2015, focusing on pediatric hemostasis and thrombosis.
