Bonnie Bermas, M.D., is a Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She specializes in rheumatology disorders.
Dr. Bermas earned her medical degree at Mount Sinai School of Medicine where she was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and completed a residency in internal medicine at New York- Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center. Drawn to immunology and autoimmune diseases, she then pursued fellowship training in rheumatology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and at the National Institutes of Health.
Dr. Bermas is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in rheumatology. She joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2017.
Prior to joining UT Southwestern, Dr. Bermas was the Clinical Director of the Lupus Center and Co-Director of the Program in Pregnancy and Rheumatic Diseases at Brigham and Women’s and Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Bermas was previously a board member of the Lupus Foundation of New England. She is a member of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR), where she was part of the core writing committee for the recently published guidelines for the management of reproductive health in rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases. She was also part of the ACR task force for the management of rheumatic disease patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2012, she earned the National Health Information Bronze Award from Arthritis Self-Management magazine.
Her research interests include pregnancy and rheumatic diseases, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), and rheumatic immune checkpoint inhibitor adverse events. She has delivered numerous international and national invited lectures, contributed to books such as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, and published a number of academic articles.
Outside of work, Dr. Bermas’ interests include her family, reading, cooking, and biking.
