Christine Hwang, M.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She specializes in pediatric liver and kidney transplantation, as well as the utilization of normothermic machine perfusion in pediatric liver transplantation.
Dr. Hwang earned her medical degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine. After completing a residency in general surgery at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, she gained advanced training in transplant surgery through a fellowship at Stanford University Medical Center. In addition, she is currently earning a master’s degree in health care management at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
Certified by the American Board of Surgery, she joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2011.
Dr. Hwang is the Surgical Director of Kidney Transplantation at Children’s Medical Center Dallas, a position she has also held at Parkland Memorial Hospital. She previously was the Surgical Director of Liver Transplantation at William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital.
At UT Southwestern, she serves on the Medical Center Transplant Surgery Program Evaluation Committee and the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. She is also a member of the Acute Liver Failure Workgroup at Children’s Medical Center.
Dr. Hwang is an editorial board member for the journal Pediatric Transplantation and an ad hoc reviewer for several other academic journals in the areas of surgery and pediatric transplantation. A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, she belongs to a host of other professional organizations, including the Society of University Surgeons, the American Society of Transplantation, the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, and the International Pediatric Transplant Association. She is an alternate member of the National Liver Review Board (Pediatric Specialty) for the United Network for Organ Sharing.
She has authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals, contributed to the book Peritoneal Dialysis: Surgical Technique and Medical Management, and been recognized by the American Transplant Congress and World Transplant Congress for her presentations.
When she’s not at work, Dr. Hwang enjoys playing the violin and reading.
