I am passionate about improving the quality of life for women. Long-standing inflammatory vulvovaginal conditions, such as lichen sclerosus and lichen planus, are often diagnosed at late stages, once scarring has obliterated normal vulvar architecture. I listen closely to my patients. We work as a team to optimize their treatment plan, enabling them to move forward with their lives.
Melissa Mauskar, M.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Dermatology and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UT Southwestern Medical Center. Her clinical practice is focused on complex medical dermatology and vulvar dermatoses. She is the founder and Director of the Gynecologic Dermatology Clinic at UT Southwestern, a tertiary referral center for gynecologists, dermatologists, and primary care physicians serving Texas and surrounding states.
Dr. Mauskar earned her medical degree at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. She completed her residency in dermatology at Georgetown University Hospital and MedStar Washington Hospital Center and is certified by the American Board of Dermatology.
In addition to general dermatology, she specializes in treating vulvovaginal conditions such as lichen sclerosus, lichen planus, lichen simplex chronicus, and pelvic floor disorders. She has a passion for educational initiatives to improve the recognition, diagnosis, and treatment of vulvar dermatoses.
Dr. Mauskar serves as part of the Parkland Health vulvology clinical faculty, working alongside her gynecology colleagues to provide multispecialty collaboration for patients with complex vulvovaginal conditions. She is also an active member of the Dermatology Inpatient Consultation team and staffs the department’s High Complexity Clinic, where she specializes in treating patients with severe cutaneous drug eruptions.
Her research interests include lichen sclerosus as well as Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis. Her research is supported by the Dermatology Foundation, and she has been involved in site-specific planning of a NIH UO1 phase III prospective multi-institutional study comparing medical treatment to supportive care for Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis.
Dr. Mauskar lectures worldwide on vulvar dermatoses. She is a fellow of the International Society for the Study of Vulvovaginal Disease (ISSVD) and serves on the Board of Directors for the North American Chapter of the ISSVD.
As an advocate for women’s health initiatives, she aims to improve the quality of life for women and their interpersonal relationships and empower patients to speak more freely about their conditions.
When not seeing patients, Dr. Mauskar enjoys traveling, running, reading, and culinary adventures with her husband, children, and their two dogs.
