Biography

Muhanned A. Abu-Hijleh, M.D., is a Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine’s Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He specializes in interventional pulmonology, thoracic oncology, advanced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and emphysema, and airway stenosis.

Dr. Abu-Hijleh earned his medical degree at the University of Jordan. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, where he also completed a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine and gained additional advanced training through mini-sabbaticals in interventional pulmonology.

Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in pulmonary medicine, critical care medicine, and sleep medicine, he joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2011.

Among his other roles at UTSW, Dr. Abu-Hijleh is the Director of Interventional Pulmonology, the Medical Director of Respiratory Therapy at Clements University Hospital, and the Director of the COPD Clinic and Program for the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. He is also an active and previous member of several UTSW committees, including the Robotics Committee and Critical Care Committee.

An active clinical researcher, Dr. Abu-Hijleh is a current and past principal investigator and co-investigator on many research protocols at UT Southwestern. His research interests include large and small airway disease, COPD, emphysema, thoracic oncology, and pleural disease. He is interested in the development of new technologies and interventional pulmonary procedures.

He is a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and a member of several professional organizations, including the American Thoracic Society and the Dallas County Medical Society. A frequent national and international lecturer and author of many peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and other published works in his areas of expertise, he serves as an associate editor and editorial board member for Lung Journal and as an ad hoc reviewer for many other peer-reviewed publications.

Personal Note

When he is not at work, Dr. Abu-Hijleh enjoys traveling, watching basketball and soccer, and reading about many subjects, including history.
