Nisa Kubiliun, M.D., is an Associate Professor in UT Southwestern Medical Center’s Department of Internal Medicine. Dr. Kubiliun serves as the Medical Director of Endoscopy Services at UT Southwestern, where she employs advanced endoscopic techniques to treat a variety of gastrointestinal disorders and cancers.
Dr. Kubiliun earned her undergraduate degree in nutritional studies from the University of Florida and her medical degree from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. She completed a residency in internal medicine at UT Southwestern in 2006 and was selected to serve as Chief Medical Resident. After a fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of Miami, Dr. Kubiliun pursued an interventional endoscopy fellowship at the University of Michigan.
With three years of general gastrointestinal training and an additional year of interventional training, Dr. Kubiliun is uniquely positioned to offer comprehensive care for gastrointestinal disorders and cancer.
Dr. Kubiliun was honored by UT Southwestern with the Lyman Bilhartz Gastroenterology Teaching Award and the Patient and Family Recognition Award. She also was selected to be a part of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy’s Leadership, Education, and Development (LEAD) program.
Dr. Kubiliun serves on the UT Southwestern Peer Review Committee, the Fellowship Evaluation Committee, and the Fellowship Selection and Retention Committee. Nationally, she is on the Training Committee for the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and serves as an ad hoc reviewer for the Gastrointestinal Endoscopy journal.
Dr. Kubiliun is a member of the American Gastrointestinal Association, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and the American College of Gastroenterology.
She was included in D Magazine's Best Doctors list for 2018 - 2022.
As an interventional endoscopist and the Director of Endoscopic Services at UT Southwestern Medical Center, gastroenterologist Nisa Kubiliun, M.D., is an integral component of a world-class endoscopic center in Dallas that couples cutting-edge, comprehensive care with a personal touch.
Dr. Kubiliun and her colleagues use the most up-to-date endoscopic techniques, including endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and endoscopic ultrasound, to treat patients with many gastrointestinal diseases and cancers of the esophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver, bile ducts, and colon.
“We can use endoscopy to treat cancers that even five years ago would have required extensive surgery and a much longer recovery process. Now the process is more effective and the outcomes are better,” says Dr. Kubiliun.
A patient with early superficial esophageal cancer a few years ago would likely have invasive surgery to have his or her esophagus removed. Now, Dr. Kubiliun can use endoscopic ultrasound and a variety of other advanced techniques to stage the cancer, sample the tumor, and even remove the cancer in many cases.
Dr. Kubiliun believes that UT Southwestern offers the best in patient care by making use of cutting-edge endoscopic treatments coupled with UT Southwestern’s multidisciplinary approach to patient care.
While patients might meet with only one or two doctors during treatment, a whole team of specialists – including oncologists, surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, and pathologists – review each case to create a comprehensive treatment plan for each individual.
The most rewarding part of the process for Dr. Kubiliun is being able to ease her patients’ fears.
“My patients tell me that I have the unique ability to let them know that I truly am going to take excellent care of them,” she says. “I’m very proud to be able to put my patients’ minds at ease and to offer them the best care available.”
