Ronald E. Hoxworth, M.D., is a plastic surgeon specializing in complex abdominal wall hernias, abdominal wall reconstruction, and abdominoplasty in Dallas, Texas.
As an expert in complex abdominal wall reconstruction in Dallas, Dr. Hoxworth treats both adults and pediatric patients who’ve had multiple failed hernia repairs, bad surgical outcomes, trauma, infections, transplants, bariatric complications, or oncology treatments. He also cares for patients with congenital defects.
"Our abdominal wall clinic has created options for patients who were told there were none," Dr. Hoxworth says. "Because of our advanced techniques, we can help patients referred to UT Southwestern as a last resort."
The Abdominal Wall Reconstruction Clinic in Dallas is a premier program built on a multidisciplinary approach. Working alongside general surgery, internal medicine, physical medicine, and rehabilitation, Dr. Hoxworth and his team can deliver a customized level of care to help provide the best outcome for the patient.
"At our clinic, the patient receives continuity of care. Our involvement doesn't end after we operate," Dr. Hoxworth says. "We are one of the first hospitals to publish an article about post-operative rehabilitation after complex abdominal wall reconstruction."
Hernias are not only functional problems; when they limit a person's regular activity, they also become social and emotional issues. Dr. Hoxworth has developed and refined his techniques to offer leading-edge reconstructive options to all of his patients.
As part of his practice, Dr. Hoxworth also performs abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck. This cosmetic procedure improves the appearance of the abdomen and trunk by removing additional skin, contouring the abdominal wall, tightening the musculature, and removing fat through liposuction.
"Abdominoplasty is truly for anyone who wants to change the appearance of their midsection," Dr. Hoxworth says. "This procedure offers instant gratification, allowing my patients to see physical improvements immediately. When patients are happy and feel good, so do I."
He can perform an abdominoplasty in conjunction with other surgeries.
"This is something that we do routinely. Performing a combined surgery, such as a hysterectomy and tummy tuck, allows us to tackle procedures simultaneously and reduce the downtime of separate surgeries."
Postpartum hernias and diastatic defects can result after pregnancy. These can be debilitating functionally and cosmetically, but there are options to repair these. Repair of these defects can also be combined with an abdominoplasty in order to help achieve the best cosmetic result.
One patient was living with the effects of a large postpartum hernia. Determined to resolve the condition, she met with Dr. Hoxworth. He performed a complete abdominal reconstruction, realigned all the patient's abdominal muscles, and then completed an abdominoplasty. The procedures corrected the hernia and transformed her life. In addition to his clinical duties, Dr. Hoxworth participates in cutting-edge, patient-directed research. He was principal investigator for an award-winning study and co-author of publications evaluating patient safety and outcomes in plastic and reconstructive surgery patients. He also lectures regularly, both regionally and nationally.
Dr. Hoxworth credits his ability to maintain his edge and evolve his knowledge to UT Southwestern.
"I can do complex procedures and work with critical patients because I am part of a great team, collaborate with accomplished specialists, and work in an environment with state-of-the-art equipment. I love what I do and where I practice, and ultimately, I hope this translates to my patients."
