Biography

Safia S. Khan, M.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine and the Department of Neurology at UT Southwestern Medical Center. A specialist in sleep disorders, she serves as Assistant Program Director of the UTSW Sleep Medicine Fellowship Program, as well as its Director of Didactics. 

Dr. Khan earned her medical degree at Quaid-e-Azam Medical College in Pakistan. She completed a residency in family medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and then received advanced training in sleep medicine through a fellowship at UT Southwestern. 

Certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and the American Board of Sleep Medicine, Dr. Khan joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2016. 

Dr. Khan’s clinical and research interests include obesity, sleep disorders, mental health disorders in women, and the prevention and early detection of these disorders. Other interests include sleep-related movement and breathing disorders, medical education, and community health. 

She is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the Southern Sleep Society, the Association of Physicians of Pakistani Descent of North America, and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine.

Dr. Khan’s upcoming publications include an article in Psychiatric Annals on sleep disorders in women, with a focus on obstructive sleep apnea in pregnancy, restless legs syndrome, hypersomnia, and insomnia in women.
