Biography
Steven Bloom, M.D., is a Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UT Southwestern Medical Center.
Born in California, Dr. Bloom received his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1985. After graduating from medical school, he completed his internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Parkland Memorial Hospital and then pursued a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology here. In 1995, he was awarded the Jack and Signe Pritchard Fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine.
Following the path of mentors like Drs. Paul MacDonald, Norman Gant, F. Gary Cunningham, and Kenneth Leveno, Dr. Bloom joined the faculty at UT Southwestern following his fellowship. He credits these faculty members, as well as Dr. Jack Pritchard (chairman 1955-1970), with influencing his decision to specialize in maternal-fetal medicine.
Dr. Bloom is board certified both in obstetrics and gynecology and in maternal-fetal medicine. He is an established clinical investigator and has served as co-investigator on several of the studies conducted by the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units Network of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. A specialist in high-risk pregnancy, he has published widely on such topics as the recurrence of preterm birth, intrapartum management, and the complications of anesthesia for cesarean delivery. He is also an author of Williams Obstetrics – the leading textbook on obstetrics.
Dr. Bloom was named a Super Doctor by Texas Monthly in 2018.
Personal Note
Dr. Bloom is married and has two children.
Meet Dr. Bloom
Associate Dean of Clinical Sciences
Dr. Bloom’s responsibilities extend beyond his specialty of high-risk pregnancy and obstetrics, to gynecology and well-woman preventive care and the gynecologic specialties of women’s cancer, reproductive endocrinology/fertility, and urogynecology. His focus is on all of women’s health care.
“It’s not about me and what I do,” says Dr. Bloom. “It’s about the faculty in the department and the women we care for, the physicians and medical students we teach, and the clinical and basic research we conduct. We are a team.”
"We offer comprehensive care to women from childhood and adolescence, onto the childbearing years, and into the onset of menopause and the golden years. We pride ourselves on our comprehensive array of services as well as the research that is conducted behind the scenes.”
Board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and in maternal-fetal medicine, Dr. Bloom completed his undergraduate education at the University of Texas at Austin before attending UT Southwestern Medical School. After finishing an Ob/Gyn residency at Parkland Memorial Hospital, he pursued a maternal-fetal medicine fellowship in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Bloom’s mentors were giants in the specialty – academicians like Drs. Jack Prichard, Paul MacDonald, Norman Gant, F. Gary Cunningham, and Kenneth Leveno. He credits them with inspiring him to join the faculty at his alma mater.
“Unless you ‘live’ here, it’s hard to explain why the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UT Southwestern is such a special place,” says Dr. Bloom. “Dr. Pritchard started it all when he was chair. He created a culture where everyone works together – an environment where excellence in patient care, teaching, and research is not just a mission, it’s a passion – something we strive for every day.”
Since the middle of the 20th century, UT Southwestern’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has been acknowledged for its contributions to women’s health care. The Department is recognized for its commitment to evidence-based clinical medicine and for its unique partnership between clinical and basic-science faculty. Faculty members believe that such a partnership is essential to understanding the underlying mechanisms that affect a woman’s health and to providing each woman with the most effective treatment options.
With clinical practices in both the UT Southwestern University Hospitals & Clinics and the Dallas County Parkland Health & Hospital System, departmental faculty physicians reach women across all socioeconomic strata and ethnicity and are committed to providing quality, accessible health care to all women.
