Biography

G. Sunny Sharma, M.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He specializes in interventional spine, sports, and musculoskeletal medicine. 

Dr. Sharma earned his medical degree at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and completed an internship at the UT Austin Dell Medical School. He then completed a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation and received advanced training in interventional spine and pain medicine through a fellowship at the University of California, Los Angeles/VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System. 

Double board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation and interventional pain medicine, he joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2019. 

Dr. Sharma is an expert in the nonsurgical treatment of spine and musculoskeletal conditions with a goal of helping patients improve their physical function and quality of life. His clinical and research interests include minimally invasive spine procedures, spine injections, ultrasound-guided injections, regenerative medicine, radiofrequency nerve ablation, electrodiagnostic medicine, and neuromodulation including spinal cord and peripheral nerve stimulation. He is also passionate about medical device and health technology innovations. 

During his training, Dr. Sharma served as Chief Resident and was elected President of the Physiatrist-in-Training National Board of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He served as Team Physician for the Lawndale High School football team in Los Angeles, including their State Championship-winning season in 2018.

He has delivered several national presentations and published multiple book chapters, including Percutaneous Needle Tenotomy and Tenex Health Therapy in the Rehabilitation Patient. His research has investigated the use of ultrasound-guided injections in the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Dr. Sharma is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the Spine Intervention Society. He currently serves on the Coverage Committee of the North American Spine Society.
