Meet Dr. He

Yu-Guang He, M.D., specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of vitreoretinal disorders, both acute and chronic in nature. A faculty member in the Department of Ophthalmology at UT Southwestern Medical Center since 2001, Dr. He remains fascinated by ophthalmology and the extent to which eye disease oftentimes involves more than the body’s visual system.

"As both a clinician and researcher, I’ve seen first-hand the refinement of procedures to treat emergent conditions like a retinal detachment. Changes in surgical techniques have resulted in smaller incisions, and no sutures, for the patient.”

“The eye is the only organ through which you can look to the brain, and it tells us a lot,” says Dr. He, who often diagnoses diabetes in patients by the distinct pattern the disease leaves on the retina. Other disorders Dr. He specializes in include macular degeneration; retinal vein occlusion; retinal holes, tears, and detachments; lattice degeneration; retinopathy of prematurity; ruptured globe injury; macular puckers; choroidal nevus; uveal melanoma; and central serious retinopathy.

A self-described “Texan by choice,” Dr. He became an ophthalmologist as the result of a series of serendipitous events in China in the early 1980s. At the conclusion of medical school in China, the government informed him he would specialize in ophthalmology.

“There was a shortage of ophthalmologists in China,” says Dr. He, who sees patients in the Aston and Fort Worth Ophthalmology clinics.

“I love the active, problem-solving aspects of ophthalmology,” says Dr. He. “I can see what’s causing my patients’ vision problems and put together a customized treatment plan for the patient. There’s been incredible progress from just 10 years ago, and I look forward to helping many more patients get through acute and chronic retinal problems.”
