The Department of Ophthalmology at UT Southwestern Medical Center offers the most comprehensive ophthalmic care in Texas and is dedicated to preserving healthy eyesight and preventing blindness.

We also offer innovative diagnostic and therapeutic care for Dallas patients with autoimmune and other health conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and rosacea, who have also been diagnosed with dry eye disease.
Dry eye disease affects over 16 million adults in the United States, and is characterized by the inability to make enough tears, or to make tears that evaporate (go away) too quickly. Serious, chronic cases can significantly decrease a patient’s quality of life. At our Advanced Dry Eye Specialty Clinic, our specialists partner with experts in autoimmune disease, endocrinology, and dermatology to personalize treatment plans that start with a patient’s underlying condition.
Comprehensive eye exams and prescriptions for glasses and contact lenses are completed by our optometrists. Refraction (the part of the eye exam that determines the need for glasses or contact lenses) is not covered by all insurance plans. Check with your insurance provider and please be aware that you may be charged for refraction if you do not have a vision plan.

The following information will help you prepare for your appointment and expedite your experience.
Please bring your current insurance card, a method of payment (we accept checks or debit/credit cards only), and a complete list of your current medications and dosages (including over-the-counter medications, herbs, and vitamins).
To make the most of your time with the doctor, make a list of questions ahead of time and bring them to your appointment.
If you’re new to the clinic, you can expect your doctor and technician to perform a thorough history and visual exam lasting one to two hours. Your physician may request you undergo additional tests in the clinic, such as a visual field exam, which takes 20 to 30 minutes to perform.
If you need to cancel your appointment, please notify the clinic at least 24 hours in advance so that we can accommodate other patients waiting to schedule an appointment.
To accurately follow your entire visual pathway, your doctor may dilate your eyes. Your pupils will take between 20 to 30 minutes to dilate, during which time you may sit in the waiting or exam room. If you anticipate your exam will include dilation, you may want to arrange for someone to drive you to and from your appointment.
It is very important that you do not run out of your medication. Be sure that you have sufficient refills to last until your next appointment with your ophthalmologist. We are happy to provide you with a written prescription upon request.
If you run out of refills, please call your pharmacy and your pharmacist will fax a refill request to us. Please allow us 24 to 48 hours to process refill requests.
