The significant role of art in creating a welcoming and healing environment was recognized from the very beginning of the planning for William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital. A group of community friends of UT Southwestern was formed to help implement this vision, and the result is a large and diverse collection that is spread throughout the building – in public spaces, patient rooms, staff areas, and corridors. The art was selected with two principles in mind: promoting healing and representing innovation.

Promoting Healing

Consistent with every decision related to Clements University Hospital, design decisions were made with a single principle in mind: Do whatever is best for the patient. Increasingly, studies show the positive effect art has not only on the patient experience but also on the healing process. Principles of evidence-based design were applied when selecting photos of Texas landscapes and other familiar images to hang in each patient room and along patient care corridors, with the goal of promoting healing and soothing the soul during what is often a stressful time.

Representing Innovation

To enhance care and the overall patient experience, a key goal driving the architectural design of Clements University Hospital was to integrate UT Southwestern’s three core missions as an academic medical center: research, education, and patient care. Creating adjacencies to promote this integration on every floor of the hospital is expected to facilitate clinical research and to accelerate the time between research discoveries and their application at the bedside, not just locally, but throughout the global medical community.

The contemporary art selected for the lobbies and waiting areas of Clements University Hospital reflects this innovative approach to hospital design, as well as the forward-thinking research of UT Southwestern more broadly, where significant discoveries are made every day by our scientists. As the scientist continually poses questions and seeks answers, so too the artist imagines innovative solutions to problems of medium, method, and meaning. The contemporary art collection of Clements University Hospital reflects this shared commitment to posing challenging questions and coming up with creative solutions.
