At UT Southwestern Monty and Tex Moncrief Medical Center at Fort Worth, we are dedicated to preserving healthy eyesight and preventing blindness. Our ophthalmic specialists rotate between this clinic, the Ophthalmology Clinic in the James W. Aston Ambulatory Care Center, and the North Dallas Ophthalmology Clinic.

R. Wayne Bowman, M.D., specializes in corneal and external eye diseases and refractive surgery. Dr. Bowman treats all corneal and external eye diseases, including performing cornea transplants and taking care of ocular infections, but he is best known for his work with LASIK, DMEK, DSEK, and cataract surgery.
Yu‐Guang He, M.D., specializes in retina and vitreous diseases, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy and serves as Director of the Vitreoretinal Fellowship Program. The author of numerous papers, book chapters, and presentations, Dr. He is an internationally invited lecturer on vitreoretinal diseases and macular degeneration.
Kamel M. Itani, M.D., specializes in oculoplastic and orbital surgery and ophthalmic oncology. He has received advanced training in standardized ophthalmic echography and in plastic, orbital, and reconstructive eye surgery. Dr. Itani has authored numerous academic papers, letters, and book chapters and is a national and international lecturer on ophthalmic surgery and oncology.
Kishan G. Patel, M.D., specializes in diseases of the retina and vitreous, cataract surgery and complications, and secondary intraocular lens implantation. He has published several articles in peer-reviewed journals related to his specialty areas.
Zachary M. Robertson, M.D., specializes in the surgical and medical management of vitreoretinal diseases, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. Dr. Robertson is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Dallas Academy of Ophthalmology, the Texas Medical Association, the Texas Ophthalmological Association, and the American Society of Retina Specialists.
Phillip Tenzel, M.D., specializes in reconstructive surgery, minimally invasive surgery techniques, and resident and fellow education. He has presented widely and authored numerous peer-reviewed articles in journals related to his specialty areas.
George C. Thorne, Jr., M.D., serves as Vice Chair of the department’s Clinical Faculty Practice. He specializes in cornea and external eye diseases and comprehensive ophthalmology. Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, Dr. Thorne joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2017.
Rafael L. Ufret-Vincenty, M.D., specializes in retina and vitreous diseases, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. Dr. Ufret-Vincenty conducts research in age-related macular degeneration. Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, Dr. Ufret-Vincenty joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2006.
Steven M. Verity, M.D., specializes in corneal and external eye diseases, refractive and cataract surgery, LASIK, and comprehensive ophthalmology. A reviewer for several professional journals, Dr. Verity has authored numerous abstracts, papers, and book chapters and presented his research nationwide.

To make your experience smoother, complete our new patient questionnaire and bring it to your first appointment.
The following information will help you prepare for your appointment and expedite your experience.
Please bring your current insurance card, a method of payment (we accept checks or debit/credit cards only), and a complete list of your current medications and dosages (including over-the-counter medications, herbs, and vitamins).
To make the most of your time with the doctor, make a list of questions ahead of time and bring them to your appointment.
If you’re new to the clinic, you can expect your doctor and technician to perform a thorough history and visual exam lasting one to two hours. Your physician may request you undergo additional tests in the clinic, such as a visual field exam, which takes 20 to 30 minutes to perform.
If you need to cancel your appointment, please notify the clinic at least 24 hours in advance so that we can accommodate other patients waiting to schedule an appointment.
To accurately follow your entire visual pathway, your doctor may dilate your eyes. Your pupils will take between 20 to 30 minutes to dilate, during which time you may sit in the waiting or exam room. If you anticipate your exam will include dilation, you may want to arrange for someone to drive you to and from your appointment.
For your convenience, there is a retail pharmacy in the Moncrief Medical Center.
It is very important that you do not run out of your medication. Be sure that you have sufficient refills to last until your next appointment with your ophthalmologist. We are happy to provide you with a written prescription upon request.
If you run out of refills, please call your pharmacy and your pharmacist will fax a refill request to us. Please allow us 24 to 48 hours to process refill requests.
