What to Expect

Our highly qualified physicians and staff are focused on the care and comfort of patients. We know there is preparation physically and emotionally for your procedure. Please take a few minutes to read the information below and, unless otherwise directed by your physician, follow these guidelines.

Check-in
  • We require all individuals to wear masks in a clinical setting.
  • Our waiting area is limited, so we request that you bring only one family member or friend with you to wait during your procedure.
  • Upon check-in at the Patient Information and Service Desk in the Outpatient Building lobby, you will be greeted by a Guest and Patient Services representative who will assist you with locating the Outpatient Surgery Center in the building.
  • Once you arrive on the 2nd floor, a patient champion will assist you through the check-in process.
  • You will need your driver’s license or other government-issued ID and your insurance information for check-in.
  • Check-in includes completing admission paperwork and signing consent forms.
  • Please be prepared to make payment for deductibles or copayments, if not already met.
  • You will be provided with a case number that allows your family or friends to track the progress of your procedure on a status board. Use of the case number and status board will be explained to you upon check-in.
  • You are responsible for the storage and handling of any personal belongings. Please refrain from bringing valuables with you on the day of surgery.
Before the Procedure
  • After check-in, a nurse will escort you to the pre-op area, where he or she will conduct an initial questionnaire and verify the procedure and site to prepare you for your procedure.
  • After the pre-op work is complete, one member of your family or one friend will be invited to see you in the pre-op area, prior to our escorting you to the operating room.
  • You should expect to see your attending surgeon in the pre-op area.
  • You will be given the opportunity to discuss your anesthesia options prior to your procedure. We encourage you to ask questions or express any concerns you might have at that time.
  • While we do the best we can to ensure a timely surgical experience, delays may happen. Any changes will be communicated promptly. We thank you for your understanding and appreciate your patience.
During the Procedure
  • Your family or friends may use the case number provided to you upon check-in to track the status of your procedure.
  • In addition, depending on the length of your procedure, a nurse may communicate your status periodically.
  • Your family and friends may also consult our patient champion located at the 2nd floor desk if they have any questions.
After the Procedure
  • You will go to the recovery room after your procedure, where a registered nurse will closely monitor you for approximately an hour. Actual recovery time is different for each individual.
  • We will assess any discomfort you have by asking you to rate your pain on a 0 to 10 scale, with 0 being no pain and 10 being the worst pain you have experienced. This allows us to appropriately treat your discomfort and assess the effectiveness of any medications you are receiving.
  • If you are scheduled to go home on the day of your procedure, you will be assessed by a registered nurse prior to discharge to ensure you have met discharge requirements.
  • A registered nurse will talk to you and your family member or friend about your discharge instructions. We encourage you to ask any questions or express any concerns at this time so we can be sure you and your family or friends are well informed about your postoperative care.
  • You will not be permitted to drive after your procedure for 24 hours. You must make arrangements for a responsible adult over the age of 18 with a valid driver’s license to transport you home. Taxi/Uber/bus transportation is not allowed.
  • Do not drive, operate machines, drink alcoholic beverages, or take medications other than those prescribed by your physician for at least 24 hours after your release.
  • Remember that your recovery continues following your procedure; some discomfort is to be expected. It is normal to feel dizzy and sleepy for several hours after your procedure. It is best to have someone at home with you for the first 24 hours after dismissal.
  • If you have any questions or concerns, contact your physician.
