UT Southwestern's School of Health Professions’ Physical Therapy Clinic offers four specialized clinics to treat patients with a wide range of diagnoses including:

• Acute, traumatic, post-operative, and overuse orthopaedic or musculoskeletal injuries
• Mobility and gait disorders related to neuromuscular or neurological disease or injury
• Prosthetic/orthotic device gait training
• Rehabilitation for recreational and professional athletes 
• Chronic pain (specific referral to the Multidisciplinary Pain Clinic)

Our clinician-faculty teams work closely with referring physicians on campus to achieve the best care possible for our patients as well as conduct research related to improving rehabilitation outcomes.  

Our Treatments

The first visit for all referred patients will focus on a thorough exam including medical history and evaluation of current needs to address primary concerns, impairments, and patient goals. 

Our focus is on reducing pain, restoring range of motion, strengthening muscles, and improving gait independence, all with the goal of optimizing function. Therapists develop a comprehensive treatment program that typically includes:

• Exercises to improve range of motion, flexibility, and muscle strength and function
• Joint and soft tissue mobilization to improve mobility and reduce pain
• Gait and balance training
• Disease/injury specific interventions (for example, orthotic bracing and motor control)
• Vestibular training
• Extensive patient education for the patient’s active participation in recovery process. This includes understanding home, work, and recreational risks; contributing factors; and adjustments to optimize function
• Development of individualized home programs to optimize recovery, improve performance, and prevent future injuries
• Utilization of modalities and technologies to reduce pain, assist in healing, and provide additional patient support (based on clinical expertise and individual patient needs), including:
  • Thermotherapy and cryotherapy
  • Electrical stimulation for muscle recruitment and strengthening
  • Blood flow restriction/modulation for muscle strengthening
  • Cervical, thoracic, and lumbar mechanical traction
  • Orthotic devices, heel lifts, or custom bracing recommendations/training
  • Therapeutic Class 4 laser therapy
  • Dry needling and instrumented soft tissue mobilization

Our Clinical Team

Our physical therapy group is a blend of highly trained UTSW faculty and clinicians specially trained in their specific area of treatment. A hands-on approach to assessment and treatment of physical conditions along with active patient involvement in goals and rehabilitation success is the hallmark philosophy of our practice. 

Clinics and patient assignment are primarily based on areas of patient needs (orthopedic, neurological, vestibular, chronic pain). The team-oriented approach between the clinical teams also allows for consultations and patient management across disciplines when needed. This maximizes the expertise of the clinical plan to optimize outcomes for patients that may have several challenges and needs in different areas.

Appointments

A doctor's referral is needed for appointments.

If you received a referral from a UTSW physician, you should be contacted within 48 hours to schedule your appointment with the appropriate clinic. 

If you received a referral from a physician outside of UTSW, please call to confirm receipt of the referral or to schedule your Physical Therapy Evaluation.

When you schedule your evaluation, you may be asked to complete specific paperwork prior to your appointment. This paperwork is important for your therapist to evaluate your medical status and best plan of care. If you are provided paperwork electronically, please complete and bring the paperwork to your appointment. If paperwork is not completed, please arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment to complete any remaining paperwork and review the explanation of your benefits. This ensures you will have your full scheduled time with your therapist.
