With today’s medical advancements, it’s easier than ever to erase age-revealing wrinkles around the eyes. Injectables such as Botox, Xeomin, and facial fillers are at the forefront of non-surgical eye rejuvenation.

When we smile, our muscles contract, creating wrinkles, or what some refer to as “laugh lines” or “crow’s feet” around the eyes. With repetitive contraction of these muscles as we age, these lines become deeper, permanent wrinkles. However, treatment is available for patients without major surgery and in a short amount of time.

The skin and muscles around the eyes are delicate, and seeing an oculoplastic surgeon for treatment for these wrinkles can provide expert precision to achieve effective results.

Eye Wrinkles Treatment Options

Injectable neurotoxins

Neurotoxins are a set of chemicals that change how nerves function – in this case, the nerves in the skin and muscle tissue surrounding our eyes. An injection of Botox or Xeomin will gently relax the muscles around the eyes to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. The process is low-risk and done in an office setting, and it causes minimal discomfort. The procedure usually takes 30 minutes to complete.

Botox or Xeomin also can help to balance eyebrows and eyelids, serving as a chemical brow lift. With injectables, we can target certain muscles to lift the eyebrows or eyelids, resulting in an even, balanced appearance.

Injectable facial fillers

Gravity plays in a role in making all of us look older, but the latest research shows that the primary hallmark of facial aging is volume loss. Think of a ball that’s lost some air: its surface is not as taut as it is when pumped up. Our maturing skin is the same. Injectable facial fillers restore volume to the face, making the area around the eyes look fuller and more youthful.

Fixing hollow, dark circles under the eyes can be riskier for patients who don’t see a specialist such as an oculoplastic surgeon. The skin around the eye is very thin and delicate, so there’s not a lot of room for error.

What Are the Potential Risks of Eye Rejuvenation?

Non-surgical eye rejuvenation risks include:

● Mild pain at the injection site

● Headache or flu-like symptoms

● Droopy eyelids or uneven eyebrows

● Eye dryness or excessive tearing

More serious complications are possible and can include:

● Double vision

● Blindness

● Loss of eyelid skin

There are cases in which the wrong muscle could be injected or nerves could be damaged. Poor application also can lead to problems and undesirable results. We often see patients who’ve had bad outcomes or complications elsewhere because of our expertise in injectable neurotoxins and fillers. The good news is that those negative results usually are reversible.

Advanced Nonsurgical Eye Rejuvenation Care

Choosing a board-certified oculoplastic surgeon helps reassure patients that their physician is adequately trained in non-surgical eye rejuvenation. Dr. Kamel Itani and I are members of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery (ASORPS), an organization committed to excellence in non-surgical eye treatments. An oculoplastic surgeon covers everything from orbital fracture repairs caused by trauma to cosmetic procedures.
