Medical Toxicology Service puts experts close at hand
As a physician, it can be hard to stay on top of the latest trends in drug abuse, let alone identify the symptoms and offer appropriate treatment. Fortunately, there are experts close at hand who specialize in medication or drug overdoses and other forms of toxic exposure. And they’re available for referrals.
The Medical Toxicology Service at UT Southwestern, led by Kurt Kleinschmidt, M.D., is the only full-service clinical toxicology program in Texas, offering both inpatient and outpatient services. “All our physicians are either board-certified or board-prepared medical toxicologists,” says Dr. Kleinschmidt. “We’re closely integrated with Parkland Memorial Hospital’s North Texas Poison Control Center.”
Inpatient consultation services are available at St. Paul and Zale Lipshy University Hospitals, as well as at Parkland and Children’s Medical Center. Services are provided 24/7 and typically involve patients with overdoses, snake bites, and acute toxic inhalations.
Outpatient care, available through the North Texas Occupational and Environmental Toxicology Clinic in UT Southwestern’s Outpatient Building, features comprehensive services for patients with known or suspected exposures to chemicals, occupational and environmental toxins, and heavy metals.
An additional service, the Lead Clinic, based at Children’s, treats children who have elevated lead serum levels and other toxic exposures.
