Our team of radiologists provides expert consultation for men with suspected or confirmed prostate cancer. Their expertise includes MRI-guided in-bore biopsies and MRI-guided transurethral ultrasound ablation of the prostate (TULSA).

Consultative Services

  • MRI-guided in-bore prostate biopsy: A precise technique used to obtain a small fragment of the suspicious area in the prostate under MRI guidance and sedation.
  • Transurethral ultrasound ablation (TULSA procedure): A minimally-invasive treatment option for select patients with prostate cancer.

What is the TULSA Procedure?

TULSA stands for "transurethral ultrasound ablation."

  • Transurethral means the procedure is done from within the prostate. There are no incisions and no cutting of the prostate tissue.
  • In medicine, the term ablation means the destruction or removal of tissue.
  • Ultrasound refers to the high-frequency sound waves often used in medicine, such as pregnancy imaging. In this procedure, the power of the sound waves is increased so they thermally heat the prostate tissue to ablate it.

These ensure the TULSA procedure is:

  • Incision-free: There are no scalpels that cut the skin or prostate tissue.
  • Customizable: The procedure can be adjusted to suit each patient's individual needs, prostate condition, and goals.
  • Predictable: A continually monitored closed-loop control of the ultrasound ensures that gentle heating is delivered to the prostate tissue, which means that the ablation is predictable and that the patient's pain is low.

Innovations in Prostate Cancer Care: Patient Webinar

Whether you have recently received a prostate cancer diagnosis or have been living with the disease, hear from our multidisciplinary team of experts (radiologists, urologists, radiation oncologists, and genetic counselors) about how they work with patients to choose the most appropriate, personalized treatment for each situation. Treatment may include surgery, radiation, active surveillance, hormone therapy, or a new ablation technique called TULSA. Watch to learn more.

Meet Our Prostate Imaging and Interventions Team

For many years, our team has worked together in close contact with our patients and in collaboration with referring urologists, radiation oncologists and clinical oncologists to offer the best diagnostic options for men being evaluated for prostate cancer.

Daniel Costa, M.D.

As team lead, Dr. Costa coordinates the clinical and research prostate-imaging related activities of the group. In addition to the interpretation of multiparametric MRI of the prostate, his expertise includes targeted biopsies of the prostate under direct MRI guidance (in-bore biopsies) and focal treatment of prostate cancer (TULSA).

Kenneth Goldberg, M.D.

Specializing in men's health throughout his nearly four decades as a physician, Dr. Goldberg has been an integral part of the advancement of treatment options for patients with prostate disorders.

Yair Lotan, M.D.

Dr. Lotan serves as Medical Director of the Urology Clinic at UT Southwestern, and is known nationally for his research on biological markers that can help determine which patients are at higher risk for recurrent cancer.

Xiaosong Meng, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Meng specializes focal treatment choices for localized prostate cancer, including the TULSA procedure. His research focuses on better understanding of the molecular mechanisms that underlie the immune response in order to determine which patients with prostate cancer are best managed by focal therapy.
