Advanced and Innovative Cancer Imaging

Advanced imaging enables our specialized physicians to visualize, evaluate, and care for all types of cancer, often eliminating the need for exploratory surgery.

UT Southwestern’s Oncology Imaging Program is dedicated to evaluating, diagnosing, treating, and studying all types of cancer through the use of advanced and innovative imaging technologies and interventions.

These sophisticated imaging tools enable our physicians to make the most informed and accurate diagnoses and prescribe targeted treatments and therapies.

UT Southwestern is one of the most experienced clinics in the area in treating thyroid cancer with radioactive iodine (I-131) therapy.

Oncology Imaging Services

UT Southwestern offers oncology imaging services that include:

• Positron emission tomography (PET): Used to evaluate and diagnose cancer and determine if cancer is spreading, is responding to treatment, or has gone into remission; can be particularly effective for lymphoma and melanoma, as well as brain, breast, head and neck, lung, gastrointestinal, and gynecological cancers
• Selective internal radiation therapy (SIR-Spheres®): Injection of microscopic beads containing radioactive material through a catheter to target inoperable liver tumors
• Palliative (pain-relief) treatments for cancer that has spread (metastasized) to the bones
• Targeted “salvage therapy” treatments for non-Hodgkin lymphoma
• Radioactive iodine (I-131) therapy to treat thyroid cancer
• Computed tomography (CT) scans
• Combined PET/CT scans
• Diagnostic mammography
• Magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopy
• Nuclear medicine bone scans and uptakes, including radioactive iodine (I-131) whole-body scans
• Prostate ultrasound
• Radiography (X-rays)
• Stereotactic targeting

Clinical Trials

As one of the nation’s top academic medical centers, UT Southwestern offers clinical trials aimed at improving radiologic imaging and better diagnosing and treating cancer.

Clinical trials can give patients access to leading-edge imaging technologies that are not yet widely available. Eligible patients who choose to participate in one of UT Southwestern’s clinical trials might benefit from imaging technologies years before they are available to the public.
